LEGAL CITATION
RETURN DEADLINE
In Iowa, landlords must return your security deposit within 30 days of you vacating the property.
This deadline typically starts from the day you return the keys and the property is empty. The landlord must either return the full deposit or provide an itemized statement explaining any deductions.
PENALTIES FOR LATE RETURN
Up to 2x your deposit in damages!
If your landlord wrongfully withholds your deposit, you may be entitled to 2 times the amount withheld as damages.
Double damages for wrongful withholding. Interest required after 5 years.
MAXIMUM DEPOSIT LIMIT
Two months rent
If your landlord collected more than the legal maximum, you may have additional claims.
INTEREST REQUIREMENTS
Iowa requires landlords to pay interest on security deposits. If your landlord has not paid you interest, you may be entitled to additional compensation.
